Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum

The general purpose of the Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities Toward a Safe and Caring Curriculum Secondary Unit and Lesson Plans web-based resource is to provide units, lesson plans and other resources that integrate safe and caring knowledge, skills and attitudes into all subject areas in the Alberta secondary curriculum. Research indicates that a successful school violence prevention program integrates safe and caring principles throughout the students' entire school experience. This resource was developed by Alberta teachers in whose classrooms the accompanying lessons have been field tested.

Introduction and Rationale

The unit and lesson plans on this site can:

  • be downloaded and used directly to teach specific curriculum outcomes
  • be used as models for the development of similar unit and lessons
Teachers can submit units and lesson plans directly to the website (see Submit a Lesson). The submissions will be vetted, edited and approved by the program manager.

Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum - Integrated Unit and Lesson Plans is based on the approaches taught in the SACSC one-day workshop for secondary teachers titled "Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum: Approaches to Integration." This workshop reviews techniques that teachers can use to integrate violence prevention into teaching practice. It models and demonstrates how teachers can utilize a variety of teaching strategies while making links to subject specific outcomes.
