Secondary Curriculum Resources

Unit and Lesson Plans

The general purpose of the Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum-Unit and Lesson Plans is to provide units, lesson plans and other resources that integrate safe and caring knowledge, skill and attitudes into all subject areas in the Alberta secondary curriculum. Research indicates that a successful school violence-prevention program integrates safe and caring principles throughout students' entire school experience. This resource was developed by Alberta teachers in whose classrooms the accompanying lessons have been field tested.

The unit and lesson plans on this site can be downloaded and used directly to teach specific curriculum outcomes. They can also be used as models for the development of similar unit and lessons.

Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum - Integrated Unit and Lesson Plans is based on the approaches taught in the SACSC one-day workshop for secondary teachers titled Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum: Approaches to Integration. This workshop reviews ways teachers can integrate violence prevention into teaching practice, and it models and demonstrates teaching strategies while making links to subject specific outcomes. A Secondary Curriculum-Writing Workshop is also available.
