Diversity Education - Policy Development Toolkit
Project Background
The Government of Alberta report A Changing Population (1995-2008) describes the following trends and issues:
- Alberta is the fourth-largest immigrant receiving province.
- The population of Aboriginal people is growing much faster than the non-Aboriginal population.
- Diversity will be the hallmark of Alberta classrooms as schools welcome increasing numbers of children from other countries, traditions, languages and cultures.
- The rich diversity of children means that there will be increasing challenges to welcome these students and help newcomers adapt to their new schools and communities.
With support from the Alberta Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund and the Canadian Heritage Multiculturalism Project, SACSC has developed a Diversity Education Policy Development Tool Kit to address these trends. Much of the racism, discrimination and intercultural tension that occurs in Canadian society stems from misunderstandings. In order to infuse Canadian culture with an appreciation for diversity, mutual respect, empathy and altruism, these values must be rooted within the policies of our schools.
