Aboriginal Adaptations for Toward a Safe and Caring Curriculum—Resources for Integration, K to Grade 6
The Aboriginal population is the youngest and fastest growing group in Alberta and throughout Canada, yet until recently, a fair representation of the cultural heritage of Aboriginal peoples has been sadly lacking in Canada’s education systems. The Aboriginal adaptations for Toward a Safe and Caring Curriculum—Resources for Integration, K to Grade 6 were developed for two reasons: firstly, to ensure that every First Nations, Métis and Inuit student can develop and share pride in their own cultural heritage. This is an important step to building self esteem and ensuring equitable opportunities for all children to succeed in school; secondly, to help non Aboriginal students and teachers develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for Aboriginal cultures. By learning more about the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures we can all do our part to break down negative stereotypes and the prejudice that exists against Aboriginal peoples.
Many people contributed to the development of the Aboriginal Adaptations. A committee comprised of an Elder, First Nations and Métis teachers, school native education consultants, non Aboriginal teachers from Aboriginal communities and the lead writers of Toward a Safe and Caring Curriculum—Resources for Integration, K to Grade 6 met regularly over a school year to develop the framework and content for this curriculum resource.
These lesson ideas are a supplement to Toward a Safe and Caring Curriculum— Resources for Integration, K to Grade 6.
