You are Invited to Help Stop Bullying at the

November 14-20 marks Bullying Awareness Week 2010, and the Society for Safe and Caring Schools & Communities invites you to support bullying prevention in Alberta by attending our fourth annual Creating Safe Spaces waffle breakfast.

This special event takes place on November 18, 2010, from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza-Chateau Lacombe in Edmonton. The breakfast will give you a chance to learn about the work we’ve been doing during the past year, hear from youth who have been personally affected by our programming, and support a great cause along with many of Alberta’s government, corporate and educational leaders.

This event will also feature a special presentation by Olympic poet Shane Koyczan (pictured right). Shane achieved international fame when he delivered the poem “We Are More” at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Millions were moved by his passion and the power of his words, and Shane’s presentation is already being heralded as a defining moment for Canada.

His poetry has also described the horrific impact of bullying in a voice that speaks from experience. Stickboy, a novel in verse, is based on Shane’s own childhood struggles with bullying. These experiences inspired his writing and drove Shane to become a passionate advocate for bullying prevention programming. His presentation is guaranteed to be an event you will never forget!

How SACSC Can Help You

The Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities (SACSC) has developed many programs, resources and workshops to help adults create safe spaces for youth. All of our work is based on the following ideals:

  • Nonviolent behaviours must be taught and reinforced consistently by the important adults in a child's life
  • Children and youth learn more effectively when they feel safe and cared for
  • Children and youth are the responsibility of all adults in a community

If you are a parent or an adult who works with youth, we have something for you. If you can't find what you're looking for on our website, contact us anytime.
